About Shimoda City
Shimoda is a scenic port town in southeastern Izu Peninsula, surrounded by mountains and the sea. Known for its emerald-green waters, white sandy beaches, and top-quality kinmedai (golden eye snapper), it also enjoys a mild climate with seasonal events throughout the year. As the first Japanese port opened to foreign trade, Shimoda retains many historical sites from the late Edo period, earning it the title "City of Open Ports."
