In 1854, when the Treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the United States was concluded and Commodore Perry’s squadron entered Shimoda to open the port, Ryosenji Temple served as Perry’s reception site and the location for negotiations with the shogunate. The detailed arrangements of the Treaty of Shimoda were concluded here.
It is now a nationally designated historic site.
On the temple grounds the MoBS Kurofune Museum houses over 3,000 original visual materials related to the opening of the country.
