This promenade takes its name from Townsend Harris, the U.S. consul who used the path for walks when he visited Shimoda.
Today the path has been paved with stone for easier walking, but it remains a quiet, scenic lane. The view at sunset, when the boats moored in Shimoda Port turn a brilliant red, is especially beautiful.
