Harris Memorial Hall, located on the grounds of Gyokusenji Temple, displays valuable material related to the opening of Japan in the late Tokugawa period, including items connected to Townsend Harris, the first U.S. Consul General to Japan. On display are Harris’s personal effects and related documents, historical manuscripts, relics of Yoshida Shoin, and one of Japan’s earliest collodion plate photographs taken by an officer aboard the Russian warship Diana.
