The Okichi-zakura that blooms at Okichi-ga-fuchi belongs to an early-blooming Oshima cherry strain. It was discovered in the 1920s and named in 1973. Its peak viewing season runs from mid-March to early April.
Okichi-ga-fuchi is said to be the spot where O-Kichi, the tragic heroine of the Bakumatsu era, threw herself into the water. Every year on March 27, the anniversary of her death, a memorial service called the Okappa Festival is held at Okichi-ga-fuchi and at Hofukuji Temple, where O-Kichi’s grave is located.
