The Black Ship Festival is a long-established event held every May.
It commemorates the arrival in 1854 of the Black Ships fleet led by United States Navy Commodore Matthew Perry in Shimoda, which marked the start of exchange between Japan and the United States.
During the festival, commemorative ceremonies, the Official Parade, Japan-U.S. friendship events, and many other programs take place across Shimoda.
Stage performances and food stalls line the streets, drawing large crowds.
On the first night a marine fireworks festival lights up Shimoda’s sky and sea.
The Black Ship Festival is one of Shimoda’s largest events, offering a vivid celebration of Japan–U.S. friendship.
